April 2023 (Rescheduled due to weather):  Pat Layton, Director of Clemson University’s Wood Utilization + Design Institute (, will lead us on a tour of the Andy Quattlebaum Outdoor Education Center at 240 YMCA Circle, Clemson, SC 29678.  It is constructed with a cross laminated timber frame, and is the first building of its type east of the Mississippi River.  It has been certified as Environmentally Friendly Construction by Green Globes.  There are wonderful images on the websites of and general contractor Sherman Construction ( (Helen Sherman was a member of our NAWIC Chapter for decades until she passed away around 2011).  Andy Quattlebaum, for whom the center is named, was a Clemson student from Pawley’s Island SC.  He passed away March 27, 2019 at the age of 22.  His given name is Donald Anderson Quattlebaum, and his family donated $2.7 million to the university in his memory for this project.  More details will follow as they are finalized.

As many of you know our former NAWIC member and friend Wanda Smith has cancer. I have been trying to help her as others like Janet O ’Rear have offered Wanda much needed support but realize she needs many things. I thought of starting a go fund me for Wanda for many reasons but the main one was I knew she would never ask for help but needed it. If you have any to spare; please support Wanda. She has a long rode back and likely won’t be back at work until next year. This past week has been very hard for Wanda due to the side effects of the therapy.

The link is below and I thank you in advance. Please pray for Wanda; her family and last but not least her friend Janet O ‘Rear.

Please forward this link to anyone that might want to see this.  Thank you,

Angie Carr
